The New airport in Madurai is going to be a 17,536-square metre building, to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 88 crore. It will have advanced features. The new facility has been designed to cater to 500 passengers. It has been proposed to have four aero-bridges, though initially only two will come up. Seven glass passenger lifts, five escalators and online baggage handling systems would make it a world class airport
This is designed by Mott Macdonald, the firm which also designed the New Delhi airport and they are experts in providing designs for private and public sector infrastructures worldwide.
Here are a few pictures, which I got by email.

Is the last picture reminding you of anything familiar? Take a closer look or see the picture below.

Now isn’t that something spectacular? While our local corporation go about demolishing temples and local people don’t respect the heritage, a foreign firm has come up with such a design highlighting our culture in their modern design.
A few more pictures of the Interior Design of the Airport.

Madurai became the 3 city in state and the 33rd city in the country to have a passport office. Its all the first city to have an air-conditioned passport office. The office became fully functional on Monday the 17th of December 07.
This could make the lives easier for a lot of people. Especially people from downsouth. Madurai city is relatively easy to access when compared to Trichy or Chennai, to many cities like Tirunelvei, Tuticorin, Tenkasi, etc… This could also ease the congestion in the other passport offices in the city.
